What is the craze about cupping?

Cupping has has become wildly popular in the sports recovery world over the last few years. Yet, it’s been around for a long time. And, it can help you – even if you aren’t an athlete! Read on to find out.

Cupping has been used in various forms for three thousand years! In fact, Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and East Asian cultures all used it extensively. While traditional cultures used whatever they had – including animal horns and bamboo, the art and science of cupping has come a long way. For instance, modern therapists use glass, plastic or silicone cups (thankfully) and treat according to modern anatomical and physiological research.

The common denominator is this: your therapist creates reverse pressure – a miniature vacuum – against your skin. This vacuum lifts the layers of your tissue away from one another. It helps skin, muscle layers, nerves, tendons and fascia slide in the way nature intended. Your therapist may also use cupping to break up scar tissue from surgeries and old injuries or to help move fluid through your tissue.

How can cupping help me?

Therapists have used cupping to help patients with many conditions, including:

  • Tendonitis / tendinopathy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle knots
  • Scar tissue
  • Post Surgical recovery
  • Poor posture
  • Restricted mobility

Many patients report excellent results with cupping. But to be honest, it’s not for everyone. First off, while most people think it feels wonderful, some people think it feels kind of weird. Also, it can break small superficial blood vessels. While this might sound scary, it’s totally safe (and may even be beneficial). What it does mean is that you might have some small, round bruises for a few days – sort of like if you’d hugged an octopus.

If you’re interested in cupping or curious if you could benefit from it, ask one of our massage therapists at your visit. On the other hand, if you’re ready to get started right away, then give us a call at 315-334-0080 or book online using the link below!
